Superheroes For Hospice was started by Spiro Ballas in early 2009. The concept is simple: collect donated comic books, make them available as fans donate money to Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center (SBHPCC), a non-profit agency and one of the first to provide end-of-life care in New Jersey. It is a win-win for all involved: comic book donors get a statement for tax purposes, fans get comics inexpensively and the hospice gets needed funds to bridge the gap between the cost of quality care and inadequate insurance reimbursement. SBHPCC serves an average of 300 patients a day found within 9 New Jersey counties, especially, Essex, Morris, Monmouth and Union Counties. By the end of 2010, over $10,000 has been raised.
