In 1975, Joe Viskocil was hired by George Lucas to provide special effects shots for the very first STAR WARS film. Among his most memorable images is the iconic shot of the Death Star exploding at the end of the movie. Viskocil returned to the STAR WARS universe with THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, as he used his talents to bring the AT-AT walkers to life on the ice planet Hoth.
Viskocil’s success in the first STAR WARS trilogy allowed him to branch out with his own special effects company that specialized in controlled explosions. Viskocil has over forty films to his credit, including STAR TREK NEMESIS, ALIEN: RESURRECTION, THE TERMINATOR, TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY, THE ABYSS, THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, BATMAN BEGINS and TRUE LIES.
In 1997, Viskocil won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for his work on the hit film, INDEPENDENCE DAY. More recently, he has worked on the films PANIC ROOM, TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE, 10:5 APOCALYPSE, SLIP, LUCIFER and AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY.
Viskocil is coming to the Big Apple Comic-Con October 16-18 to sign autographs and greet fans. Don’t miss your chance to meet this iconic master of special effects!
