Can lightning strike twice? A year ago, no one expected anything from a movie called Guardians of the Galaxy, especially since it featured a talking tree called Groot! Now, in a mere matter of weeks, Marvel’s Ant-Man (starring Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas) is slated to open, and everyone’s wondering how a movie about the laughing-stock of superhero-dom can possibly succeed! But if—when!—Ant-Man is a huge hit, then you’ll want to know all you can about the history of the tiny titan. So, here to give you the (generously illustrated) Ant-Man lowdown is superhero expert Danny Fingeroth, longtime editor of Spider-Man and author of Superman on the Couch: What Superheroes Really Tell Us About Ourselves and Our Society.

We examine the positive and negative representations of Wonder Woman in her own comics and in the media at large. We will discuss her portrayal in Wonder Woman, Sensation Comics and the DC Animated Universe. What does the future hold for Wonder Woman and why is she important?

75 years ago, in 1940, as the Nazi conquest of Europe continued and the Battle of Britain raged, the United States watched from the sidelines while instituting the first peacetime draft. At the same time, the world of comics was experiencing an incredible sustained period of invention, as The Joker, Robin, Green Lantern, the Flash, Hawkman, the Spirit, Catwoman, and Captains America and Marvel all debuted! (Not to mention the debuts of pop culture icons Bugs Bunny, and Brenda Starr, and classic movies Fantasia and The Great Dictator!) Showing and discussing historical and cultural factors that made that year so important is a panel including Dr. Peter Coogan (Superhero: The Secret Origin of a Genre) and Danny Fingeroth (co-editor of The Stan Lee Universe).

The martial arts of western sword fighting have been reborn and are gaining popularity as a part of Historical European Martial Arts, or HEMA. People all over the world are picking up the sword once more, resurrecting dead arts by studying the works of historical fencing masters. Rebecca Boyd and Tim Maurer of Second Intent Fencing in Wentzville, Missouri will discuss some of the arts being practiced today, including longsword, rapier, dagger, and wrestling. See examples of historical sources, martial demonstrations, and learn about the process of reconstructing the art from manuscripts dating back as far as 725 years. Ask questions about the actual practice of your favorite weapons from film and television.

Warren Dion Smith, make up and effects artist at Weta Workshop, takes us through a transformation of a Weta character using prosthetics and makeup and techniques used on set from the latest films. This will be a real time make up demonstration where Warren will discuss techniques, materials and answer questions during the demonstration.

How do a group of drinking buddies transform themselves into one of St. Louis preeminent indie comics publishers? To celebrate the group's fifth anniversary, the Ink and Drink editorial team reveals how a love of comics, cheap beer, and half-price appetizers gradually gave birth to a showcase for dozens of local cartoonists, offering insight into the small press publishing world as well as a preview of their latest title, the all-ages friendly anthology Juice Box.

This panel will be a demonstration of the steps taken to bring an idea from script to screen. Cook will begin with a short story of how he became an animator back in the late 1970s and then describe the different departments in an animation studio and what they do to move the development of the cartoon forward. Tom will have a few scenes he has worked on over the years on video and then will open the floor for questions about either the process or any other question you may have.
