What is Steampunk? Increasingly popular and rabidly promoted by its converts, this aesthetic has a design sensibility that borrows from our steam-engine past to imagine a Victorian future that never was. From Victorian England to American Wild West, to the deepest of darkest Africa, fashion from all over the world is fair game. But what is good fashion without good accessories? This panel will talk about how to build props and devices for the steam punk costume of your dreams. Starting a basic level that allows for beginners, but informative enough that experts can also gain from this panel, it is open to all who wish to learn about steam punk, in a half lecture, half Q and A format. Come explore steampunk with Joshua Hart AKA Baron Bon Bar, noted local-to-St. Louis Steampunk artist who has had nationwide exposure, in several books and websites, including Geeks are Sexy, Boing Boing, 1000 incredible costume ideas, and the International Steam Punk Book of Fashion. 11:00 - 11:45AM WHO KNOWS WHAT EVIL LURKS IN THE HEARTS OF MEN (& WOMEN)? I DO! I DO! THE DELIQUENT COMIC ART OF WASCALLY WEE HARROFF
Using Comic Life software, these comic historians will offer the humorous, bittersweet assertion that comics really are responsible for juvenile delinquency - and they're just the comic-reading delinquents to prove it! Ever since the self-appointed culture wars expert of the 1950s, Dr. Fredric Wertham (think Dr. Phil), declared comics responsible for juvenile delinquency, America's parents have been running scared of their children. The funny thing is that the same topics that frightened the bejabbers out of Americans back then continue to plague our nightmares, today. The only difference is that our weather is worse. The authors will relate Wertham's loony, quasi-scientific arguments and then show you how his hypothesis can be used to create award-winning modern art. But don't look too closely! Are those naughty bits in Wascally's comic art only visible to his eye or do you see them, too? It's infinitely more fun to be a juvenile delinquent. Learn how! (ROOM 160)
