75 years ago, as fateful events that would lead to the outbreak of World War II in September 1939 were coming together in Europe, the U.S.A. was experiencing, in the same year, an explosion of popular culture. In 1939, Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27; Timely (later Marvel) Comics released Marvel Comics #1, showcasing the first Marvel superheroes, Sub-Mariner and the Human Torch; and Hollywood produced classic films including The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind and Stagecoach. Discussing historical and cultural factors that made that year so important is a panel including Danny Fingeroth (Superman on the Couch), Louie Dean Valencia-Garcia (Truth, Justice, and the American Way in Franco’s Spain) and Jackson Ayres (Comics Through Time.)

Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

While breaking into the video games industry doesn’t require secret knowledge, it isn’t easy either. Join video game industry veteran Garry Gaber and producer Melissa Gaber, both of Escape Hatch Entertainment, as they participate in a 45 minute Q&A session about “How to Break into Video Games”. Don’t miss this opportunity to pick the brain of industry veteran Garry Gaber, formerly of LucasArts Entertainment, who has been running his own studio since 2004 as well as acting as director of the Game Development Institute at Austin Community College.

Ten years ago, the dead came back to life in a big way, and the zombie genre has been shambling along ever since. From "28 Days Later," "Shaun Of The Dead," "The Zombie Survival Guide," "The Walking Dead" comic, "Dawn of the Dead" remake and more, 2003/04 was a period that kickstarted the current wave of undead heads. 4:00 – 4:30PM MICHAEL ROOKER VS. THE AUDIENCE (ROOM 217)
Michael Rooker, who burst on the scene more than two decades ago in the title role in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, also had key roles in Cliffhanger, The Bone Collector, Mississippi Burning, Sea of Love and Days of Thunder. While many have fit the brute, villain and psychopath type, he has also shown versatility in numerous “good guy” roles in his career, none more apparent than the love-hate fan favorite Merle Dixon on AMC’s acclaimed series, The Walking Dead. Moreover, Rooker’s star continues to rise as with Marvel’s next big super hero team, Guardians of the Galaxy. Being casted as the game hunter, Yondu Udonta of the Zatoan tribe, Rooker is sure to bring his signature flair to the role and mark his stamp onto the Marvel Universe. Danny Fingeroth (Spider-Man; The Stan Lee Universe; longtime Marvel writer/editor, researcher on Taschen’s upcoming 75 Years of Marvel: From the Golden Age to the Silver Screen) and Jackson Ayres (Comics Through Time; Texas A&M University) present an illustrated tour through the more than seven decades of the phenomenon that is Marvel.

In this panel we will discuss amnesia, which is the main plot of author Brandy Truly’s novel Sonar The Crashing. Then we will talk about how to develop a plot in a story. The audience will be given scenarios and polls to discuss as a group about amnesia. They will also have games to practice how to incorporate plot in a story.

Wizard World is proud to present world-renown animator Tom Cook (Tarzan; Flash Gordon; He-Man and the Masters of the Universe; She-Ra Princess of Power) to San Antonio! This panel will be a demonstration of the steps taken to bring an idea from script to screen. Cook will begin with a short story of how he became an animator back in the late 1970s and then describe the different departments in an animation studio and what they do to move the development of the cartoon forward. Tom will have a few scenes he has worked on over the years on video and then will open the floor for questions about either the process or any other question you may have. So come out and see first-hand how your favorite cartoons were made!

Comics and graphic novels have come into their own as subjects worthy of—indeed, demanding—attention from academia. Historians and cultural theorists teach courses, hold conferences, and publish books on various aspects of sequential art. Colleges and universities teach courses in comics as literature and social history as well as how to make them. Here, to give an overview of various ideas about and approaches to comics studies are a cross-section of comics scholars and teachers, including: Jackson Ayres (Texas A&M University), Louie Dean Valencia-Garcia (Fordham university), Sam Cannon (University of Texas at Austin) and William S. Bush (Texas A&M University). PLUS: The panelists will also each give thought-provoking presentations on their comics-related areas of expertise. It’s enough to make you want to apply to grad school!
