Carl Sagan brought the universe into our living rooms with his 1980 special 'Cosmos' which made science elegant and compelling. Now the updated series is returning, hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson & executive producer Seth MacFarlane of 'Family Guy' fame. Fresh from a trip to Space Camp, TV personality & journalist Aaron Sagers gives a sneak peek into what to expect of the National Geographic show while discussing what made Sagan's original such an out-of-this-world work. Chris Claremont has encountered more success than most writers ever dream of. His stories have achieved best-seller status, won numerous awards, and are trendsetters for the industry. Although best known for his unbroken 17-year run on Marvel Comics’ X-Men series, where he created the characters of Rogue, Gambit, Sabretooth, Kitty Pryde and the White Queen, among others, he has also written seminal characters such as Batman and Superman; originated several creator-owned series; is published throughout the world in many different languages; and authored nine novels. Chris will be interviewed by his longtime Marvel colleague Danny Fingeroth (Superman on the Couch.) (ROOM 104)

Warren Davis, the designer and programmer of Q*bert, worked in video game development throughout the 1980s and 1990s, first for Gottlieb/Mylstar, then for Williams/Bally/Midway working alongside some of the luminaries of the industry. In this panel, he shares some candid and amusing behind-the-scenes stories about what it was like to be a part of the making of some classic and not-so-classic games. (ROOM 104)

75 years ago, as fateful events that would lead to the outbreak of World War II in September 1939 were coming together in Europe, the U.S.A. was experiencing, in the same year, an explosion of popular culture. In 1939, Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27; Timely (later Marvel) Comics released Marvel Comics #1, showcasing the first Marvel superheroes, Sub-Mariner and the Human Torch; and Hollywood produced classic films including The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind and Stagecoach. Discussing historical and cultural factors that made that year so important is a panel including Trina Robbins (Pretty in Ink: American Women Cartoonists 1896–2013), Thomas Andrae (Creators of the Superheroes,) Mel Gordon (Voluptuous Panic: The Erotic World of Weimar Berlin) and Danny Fingeroth (Disguised as Clark Kent: Jews, Comics, and the Creation of the Superhero.) From the presence of mixed race rhetoric in Star Trek, to the creation of an African superhero in Black Panther: The Animated Series, to the possibility of a genderqueer reading of the Alien film series, Michele S. 3:00 – 3:45PM THE ART OF ANIMATION PRODUCTION WITH ANIMATOR/DIRECTOR TOM COOK
Wizard World is proud to present world-renown animator Tom Cook (Tarzan; Flash Gordon; He-Man and the Masters of the Universe; She-Ra Princess of Power) to Sacramento! This panel will be a demonstration of the steps taken to bring an idea from script to screen. Cook will begin with a short story of how he became an animator back in the late 1970s and then describe the different departments in an animation studio and what they do to move the development of the cartoon forward. Tom will have a few scenes he has worked on over the years on video and then will open the floor for questions about either the process or any other question you may have. 6:00 – 6:45PM THE HISTORY OF US VS THEM
The hottest video game technology to hit arcades in 1983 was the laserdisc, featured in such classic games as Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, and Mach 3. On the tail end of this wave came Us Vs Them, a sci-fi invasion themed game featuring live actors and flying footage with computer generated fighter planes and UFOs. Warren Davis, the game's programmer, tells the fascinating story (using photos and video) of how this game came to be, and why (despite strong player response) you probably never heard of it. 6:00 – 6:45PM SUPER HERO CINEMA: SEQUELS AND SPIN-OFFS
Ever since Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury introduced the Avengers Initiative at the end of 2008's "Iron Man," fans of the genre have been treated (or mistreated?) by the introduction of more and more heroes through spin-offs, stinger scenes and Easter Eggs. From Thor's introduction in "Iron Man 2" and Thanos in "The Avengers," to Lex Luthor in "Man of Steel" and The Flash on "Arrow," we examine the best and worst introductions of these characters, the significance of these surprise moments and the upcoming projects featuring these characters on the big and small-screen. Perhaps the most mysterious of the creative skills involved with making comics, inking can make or break the effectiveness of individual illustrations and entire comics stories. Highly accomplished, veteran inkers Josef Rubinstein (Spider-Man; Wolverine) and Joe Weems (Hulk: The End; New X-Men) talk with moderator Danny Fingeroth (How to Create Comics From Script to Print) about their incredible careers and about the craft of inking, including meeting the challenges of the digital world. Most will know him as the immortal ghost sorcerer Lo Pan in John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, but you may also recognize him as the voice of Mr. Ping in Kung Fu Panda or from the hilarious comedy Balls of Fury as Master Wong, the blind mentor for down-and-out former professional ping pong phenomenon that went from zero to hero. No matter what character he plays, they are always laughs to be had. While many have fit the brute, villain and psychopath type, he has also shown versatility in numerous “good guy” roles in his career, none more apparent than the love-hate fan favorite Merle Dixon on AMC’s acclaimed series, The Walking Dead.
