Since its earliest days, Hip-Hop culture has been linked to comic books: graffiti and album covers utilize superhero imagery, rappers adopt secret identities and grandiose aliases, artists use the vocabulary of comics to help forge a new urban culture. Comics creators have responded in kind, using elements of Hip-Hop to give grounding to street-level storytelling, incorporating graffiti techniques into logo design and art styles, and using rap lyrics for context and content. Both forms thrive on excitement and energy, inspire passionate fanbases, and have risen from modest beginnings to achieve global recognition. Patrick Reed, editor of Depth of Field Magazine, brings together musical visionaries, visual artists, and other special guests from the comic and music industries to celebrate the possibilities in combining these worlds, discuss how forms have intersected over the last four decades, and view ahead toward the future. Will Eisner was one of the giants of the field of sequential art. A panel of Eisner-experts discusses his ongoing influence, 35 years after the publication of his groundbreaking work, A Contract With God, a book that pretty much invented the entire graphic novel category. Panelists include Paul Levitz (former DC president and publisher; Legion of Super-Heroes writer); Dennis O’Neil (Batman and Iron Man writer and editor); and Chris Couch (Eisner’s editor; professor at UMass Amherst). The panel will be moderated by Danny Fingeroth (Spider-Man editor; author of Superman on the Couch). Eisner’s other landmark works--including The Spirit and P.S. Magazine--will be discussed as well. Filmmaker Vlad Yudin has brought together an anticipated graphic novel,Head Smash, tied into a screenplay he’s developing for next year. The story revolves around Smash, an orphan who’s brought up by a powerful and corrupt man and who finds himself squaring off against that man and his organization after his wife and unborn child disappear. Set in a “pre-apocalyptic” future, the story follows the physically-gifted Smash in his effort to rescue the ones he loves. Ken Steacy decided at age eleven to become a professional comic book writer/artist, a dream he realized in 1974. Since then, he has worked in the industry as author, artist, art director, editor, and publisher, chronicling the exploits of Spider-Man, Harry Potter, and the Star Wars gang, to name a few. He currently teaches at Camosun College, Victoria, in Comics & Graphic Novels. And he comes to NYC to share with you how to best tell your stories through the visual medium of comics! Bursting on the scene more than two decades ago in the title role in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Michael Rooker continued with key roles in Sylvester Stallone’s 1993 hit Cliffhanger, and the Denzel Washington/Angelina Jolie blockbuster The Bone Collector in 1999. While many have fit the brute, villain and psychopath type, he has also shown versatility in numerous “good guy” roles in his career, none more apparent than the love-hate fan favorite Merle Dixon on AMC’s acclaimed series, The Walking Dead. Moreover, Rooker’s star continues to rise as he was recently the newest addition to Marvel’s next big super hero team, Guardians of the Galaxy.
