Ever wonder how humor artists are able to create characters and stories that leave us laughing like idiots? Here, one of the finest practitioners of the simple art of humor—Phil Ortiz (The Simpsons; Muppet Babies)—tells and shows you how he does it! Moderated by Danny Fingeroth (How to Create Comics from Script to Print).

5:00- 5:45PM NEW ORLEANS FAN PANEL WITH A MARDI GRAS BEAT (ROOM 238)
In 1967, a bunch of New Orleans fans took a train to New York to visit the DC Comics offices at 575 Lexington Avenue. We brought back pictures. Another fan trip was to watch Apollo 11 take off for the moon. Panelists: Rick Norwood, editor of Comics Revue. Danny Frolich, designer of Mardi Gras parades. Justin Winston, curator of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, who, if we ask him nicely, may tell us how he got the original art to an Atomic Knights story by Murphy Anderson. Then came Hurricane Katrina. But New Orleans fandom carries on, just like Mardi Gras. “Throw me something, mister!”

This panel will look at how New Orleans Public Library uses current popular culture such as Game of Thrones, Hunger Games, Dr. WHO and graphic novels to create interesting and educational programs for the public. Mark Bagley has been drawing comics professionally since winning the Marvel Try-out Contest in 1983. Bagley remains one of the most sought after pencilers in the industry, his storytelling abilities and elegant style always in demand. From the New Warriors to Amazing Spider-Man to Thunderbolts to Ultimate Spider-Man to Batman to the Hulk, Bagley has been part of some of the most important storylines in comics history. Today, Mark speaks about his amazing career, and show you how he draws characters and stories! Mark’s former editor Danny Fingeroth (New Warriors; Amazing Spider-Man) moderates. From wardrobe malfunctions to crazy fans, to how to construct your own costumes and even how to go to the bathroom (you know, in costume), this cosplay squad will give you the inside skinny on the ultimate in spandex fandom. Dr. Travis Langley (Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight) explores superheroes’ relationships, the human and superhuman nature of sex and love in capes and tights. Civil rights have long been reflected in popular media, All in the Family, Star Trek and Will and Grace have all broken ground in various ways, but what about Comic books? By exploring civil rights themes in comic books such as Captain America, Luke Cage, Alpha Flight and many others we will explore how civil rights and social justice themes have played out in comic books over the years and show the impact they made on society. These themes are especially relevant than ever with the emergence of the New Captain America and Thor.

The Art of Saturday Morning Cartoon Production with Animator/Director Tom Cook Wizard World is proud to present world-renown animator Tom Cook (Tarzan; Flash Gordon; He-Man and the Masters of the Universe; She-Ra Princess of Power) to New Orleans! This panel will be a demonstration of the steps taken to bring an idea from script to screen. Cook will begin with a short story of how he became an animator back in the late 1970s and then describe the different departments in an animation studio and what they do to move the development of the cartoon forward. Tom will have a few scenes he has worked on over the years on video and then will open the floor for questions about either the process or any other question you may have. So come out and see first-hand how your favorite cartoons were made!

Explore some of the basics of manga and anime, including common themes, storylines and images for a variety of age groups from Chibi to Hentai. Global mobile game developer and publisher Gameloft opened New Orleans’ first major game studio in in 2011. Gameloft developers will share with you how they broke into the industry, what it’s like to work in games, and what it takes to make it atGameloft. The Gameloft New Orleans studio teams have created or contributed to a number of mobile game titles including Ice Age Village, Cosmic Colony, Cars: Fast as Lightning and Spiderman Unlimited. Gameloft was founded in 1999 and was the first developer to put an FPS on a mobile device, winning countless awards before and since.

Are you prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse? Several government agencies (including the US Centers for Disease Control) have used the Zombie Apocalypse as a fun and interesting way to teach people about the need to be prepared for any disaster, be it zombie invasion, earthquake, hurricane, terrorism, or epidemic, such as the Ebola virus. This panel will provide an entertaining analysis of the popularity of the Zombie Apocalypse in movies, TV, and popular culture, and conclude by giving you tips on what plans you need to make, and which items you need to have in your kit, to survive the apocalypse (or whatever disaster you might face.) The panel is presented by disaster planning expert Dr. Robert Collins, Professor of Urban Studies and Public Policy at Dillard University in New Orleans.
