Comics and graphic novels have come into their own as subjects worthy of—indeed, demanding—attention from academia. Historians and cultural theorists teach courses, hold conferences, and publish books on various aspects of sequential art colleges and universities teach courses in comics as literature and social history as well as how to make them. Here, to give an overview of various ideas about and approaches to comics studies are a cross-section of comics scholars and teachers, including: Travis Langley (Henderson State University; Batman and Psychology,) Eric Bailey (Henderson State University,) and Sherri Craig (Southeastern Louisiana University.) 75 years ago, as fateful events that would lead to the outbreak of World War II in September 1939 were coming together in Europe, the U.S.A. was experiencing, in the same year, an explosion of popular culture. In 1939, Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27; Timely (later Marvel) Comics released Marvel Comics #1, showcasing the first Marvel superheroes, Sub-Mariner and the Human Torch; and Hollywood produced classic films including The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind and Stagecoach. Discussing historical and cultural factors that made that year so important is a panel including Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson (granddaughter of Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, the founder of DC Comics); Marv Wolfman (Teen Titans; Blade), Travis Langley (author of Batman and Psychology); Eric Bailey (Henderson State university) and Danny Fingeroth (author of The Stan Lee Universe.) Wizard World is proud to present world-renown animator Tom Cook (Tarzan; Flash Gordon; He-Man and the Masters of the Universe; She-Ra Princess of Power) to New Orleans! This panel will be a demonstration of the steps taken to bring an idea from script to screen. Cook will begin with a short story of how he became an animator back in the late 1970s and then describe the different departments in an animation studio and what they do to move the development of the cartoon forward. Tom will have a few scenes he has worked on over the years on video and then will open the floor for questions about either the process or any other question you may have. This panel will explain and explore some of the basics of manga and anime', including common themes, storylines and images for a variety of age groups from Chibi to Hentai. Also, beyond the basics, we will also attempt to shed some light on the occasionally confusing symbols, cultural/mythic references and just seemingly odd stuff used in this storytelling different from what many of us grew up with. For instance, what's up with the 'teardrop,' girls with cat ears and what's up with all the tentacles? Cultural trends are almost always reflected in popular media, comic books are no exception. By exploring some ground breaking moments in comic book history and how they reflect what was happening at the time of their writing we can gain a better understanding of how comic books portrayed early stages of the civil rights movement and other social justice movements such as LGBTQ issues and immigration. Finally we will also have a Q and A on the state of comic books and tolerance as it stands today. (ROOM 238)

3:00 – 3:45PM BATMAN AT 75/FINGER AT 100
While other creators scrambled to cash in on Superman’s sudden popularity by creating more bright, impossible heroes, Bob Kane and Bill Finger gave us Gotham City’s dark and improbably possible Batman. Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27 (1939) and has gone on to become one of the most recognizable figures in the world. 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of Tim Burton’s Batman motion picture, 50th anniversary of Batman’s “New Look,” 75th anniversary of Batman’s debut, and 100th birthday of uncredited co-creator Finger. Several government agencies (including the US Centers for Disease Control) have used the Zombie Apocalypse as a fun and interesting way to teach people about the need to be prepared for any disaster, be it zombie invasion, earthquake, hurricane, terrorism, or pandemic. This panel will provide an entertaining analysis of the popularity of the Zombie Apocalypse in movies, TV, and popular culture, and conclude by giving you tips on what plans you need to make, and which items you need to have in your kit, to survive the apocalypse (or whatever disaster you might face.) A screening of the pilot episode of Comic Geeks, a new web series debuting in 2014. The story follows three friends at various stages of comic geekery: Dan, the die-hard weekly shopper, Jeff, the indie-only cartoonist, and Brian, who struggles with reading comics and acting like an adult. Together, the three try to figure out what makes a comic geek, and how to be an adult doing it. (ROOM 242)

English TV actor, thespian and film director, Matt Smith, is joining New Orleans Comic Con for a rare, inside look into his journey as actor. Best known for his portrayal of the wibbly-wobbly Doctor in the BBC's Doctor Who, Matt Smith has not only left his indelible mark on the 50-year-old legacy, but also taught us that bow ties and fish sticks with custard are cool. Smith began carrying the mantel of Time Lord back in 2009 as the youngest Doctor in the show's history, and just retired his sonic screwdriver during the sentimental and heartfelt Christmas Special episode this past December. The best of the best will be dressed to impress in their superhero & pop culture finest, so be prepared for some serious cosplay. Grab your buddies and suit up to take a chance at bringing home the gold!

Skits are encouraged during the Wizard World Costume Contest, but not required.

A skit/performance is defined as an act which may involve; choreographed sequences, acting parts, or dancing. Walking out on stage and posing, with music is not considered a skit/performance.

To ensure everyone gets a chance, as well as to keep things moving there is a strict time limit for all entrants. The time limit for those without a skit is thirty (30) seconds for posing for both groups and individuals, so please think about these before the event. Performances are limited to one (1) minute for individuals, and one minute thirty seconds (1:30) for groups. There will be no additional time for poses, so please factor this into your skits. It is recommended that you rehearse and time your performances before the event to ensure that this can be adhered to.

Marv Wolfman has created more characters that have gone on to television, animation, movies and toys than any other comics creator since Stan Lee. Marv is the writer-creator of Blade, the Vampire Hunter, which has been turned into three hit movies starring Wesley Snipes, as well as a TV series. Marv was the co-creator of the New Teen Titans comics series, which became a runaway hit show on the Cartoon Network. Marv has also been Editor-in-Chief at Marvel Comics, senior editor at DC Comics and founding editor of Disney Adventures magazine. While at Marvel, Wolfman wrote lengthy runs of Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and Doctor Strange. His best-received work was The Tomb of Dracula, a fledgling horror comic which Wolfman turned into a rich, complex piece of high gothic, well matched with the moody penciling of Gene Colan. Taking Bram Stoker's basic story, Wolfman created his own vampire mythology and introduced a set of new characters, including Blade. Marv will be interviewed by longtime Marvel editor Danny Fingeroth (Darkhawk; Deadly Foes of Spider-Man.) (ROOM 338/THIRD FLOOR)

Join LAIKA's Mark Shapiro for this entertaining and informative inside look at the creation of an animated film. Using visuals, Mark will show how animators breathe life into puppets in 24-frames per second. Mark will also talk about the history of the Entertainment side of the company, where, before hand-making the dazzling features Coraline (2009) and ParaNorman ( 2012), LAIKA created the CG-classic short Moongirl (2005).
