One day, someone called Brichibi Cosplays “Princess Whale” and told her to go off and fry some chicken. So, she did just that, posting the pictures on the internet and writing an article for xoJane about being a plus sized cosplayer. While it’s true that nicknames like “Princess Wonderball” or lovely requests to “stop acting white” or to die a “lesbian bed death” have come her way due to her race, size, sexuality, and general geekiness, this black, lesbian, plus sized cosplayer has decided not to let it get to her and to keep enjoying what cosplay is really about: having fun and showing love to your favorite characters. The model of comics creators tethered to one or two major publishers, working on adventures of corporately-owned characters is no longer the only game in town. Many of the top talents in comics work either exclusively on their own material, while others work both sides of the street, alternating independent work with mainstream assignments done in their own distinctive styles. In this incredible panel, speaking about how they have forged their own paths (and reading from their work), are some of the most distinctive creators in comics today: Dean Haspiel (The Red Hook; Beef With Tomato), Barbara Schulz (MCAD professor; The Chronicles of Kalki), Zak Sally (Sammy the Mouse; Like a Dog) and Victor Dandridge (EIC Vantage In-House; creator of Origins Unknown). Jonah Jameson himself is being flown in from New York on his latest press tour stop to discuss such topics as to why Spider-Man is a menace, why Spider-Man isn't a hero, why Spider-Man can't be trusted and why we would be better off without Spider-Man. Have a differing opinion? That means it's up to you, the audience, as guest reporters to this press conference to prove it. Square off against a professional character actor to see if you can be the reporter that forces the Daily Bugle's editor to announce a retraction. Listen to Jameson's editorial, hear him answer the panel's reporters and then prepare your own defense of Spider-Man in this interactive, entertaining, performance based panel.
J. Jonah Jameson is presented by Karl Brevik, a member of SAG/AFTRA and San Diego Comic Con International Professional. This panel has been hosted in several states as a performance based panel of entertainment. Fans of Spider-Man get all the laughs and joy of seeing J. Jonah Jameson talk his way out of almost everything thrown his way.
