12:30–1:15PM SUPERHEROES AND DISABILITIES with POWERS’ MICHAEL AVON OEMING, THE FLASH’S GORDON PURCELL AND UMN’S ALEX LUBET (ROOM M100i)
While superhuman powers have traditionally been thought of as gifts, for many characters—for instance the mutant X-Men—superpowers are often experienced as a form of disability. In other cases, such as the blind Daredevil, superpowers are viewed as a way to compensate for a disability. But as society’s view of the differently-abled evolves, so, too does how the characters see themselves and each other, as well as how readers perceive them. Join us for a fascinating discussion of how comics, movies and TV series present disabilities, with Michael Avon Oeming (Powers; Thor), Gordon Purcell (Star Trek, Wonder Woman) and moderator Alex Lubet (disabilities professor, University of Minnesota).

2:00 – 2:45PM FIRE THE HEAD CANONS!
This ain’t no slash-fic! Fan theories that elevate and enhance the canonical stories, characters and properties and why the digital age – particularly with mainstream outlets like Amazon worlds – is the best time to be a super fan. From well known concepts such as James Bond is a code name and Hogwarts is a figment of Harry’s imagination to lesser known ideas like a socialpathic – suicidal Captain Janeway. The overall theme of the discussion is that the head canon is the ultimate example of collective mythology, as fans not only enjoy their fandom, but also contribute to its continued existence and growth – and how this modern, digital era serves to augment that collective mythology through mainstream acceptance via fan films on You Tube like Star Trek: Of Gods and Men, and especially the Amazon worlds publishing platform.
