11:00 – 11:45AM TO BOLDLY GO: STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION & ANTHROPOLOGY
In 1966, Gene Roddenberry made television history with the concept for Star Trek. Nearly fifty years later, it is has become a cultural phenomenon, spawning twelve films, five television series, novels, and comics. Throughout its incarnations, Star Trek can be seen as a cultural mirror, echoing the issues of the human race through the plot of the show. Issues of xenophobia, cultural contamination, and linguistics all factor heavily in each series, but especially in Star Trek: The Next Generation. This panel will examine the role of anthropology in The Next Generation and what we can learn from the example that Gene Roddenberry created for us. (ROOM 210)

Comics scholar Andrei Molotiu (Abstract Comics) takes us on a tour of the way comics have used abstract shapes and colors to convey ideas and feelings, from their beginnings to today. Accomplished comics writer Danny Fingeroth (How to Create Comics From Script to Print) and writing instructor Miles Fuller (University of Louisville) show and tell you how to write comics and graphic novels, going from initial idea to outline to script to finished story. Plus, the panelists will answer your questions about both the creative and business sides of the comics writing profession, including how to find an artist to work with (hint: a comics convention is the number one place!) and how to write exciting dialogue! Michael Rooker, who burst on the scene more than two decades ago in the title role in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, also had key roles in Cliffhanger, The Bone Collector, Mississippi Burning, Sea of Love and Days of Thunder. While many have fit the brute, villain and psychopath type, he has also shown versatility in numerous “good guy” roles in his career, none more apparent than the love-hate fan favorite Merle Dixon on AMC’s acclaimed series, The Walking Dead. Steve Rude, an artist best known as the co-creator of Nexus, can be an elusive and confusing subject, even to dedicated fans of the man’s work. Very arguably one of the greatest comic book artists living today, “The Dude” has never assumed the “star” status afforded to many ’80s contemporaries like Paul Gulacy, Dave Stevens and Matt Wagner. Rude is the subject of this new documentary. We will show the film, after which filmmaker Ian Fischer will discuss the movie and its subject, and take questions from the audience. English TV actor, thespian and film director, Matt Smith, is joining Louisville Comic Con for a rare, inside look into his journey as actor. Best known for his portrayal of the wibbly-wobbly Doctor in the BBC's Doctor Who, Matt Smith has not only left his indelible mark on the 50-year-old legacy, but also taught us that bow ties and fish sticks with custard are cool. Smith began carrying the mantel of Time Lord back in 2009 as the youngest Doctor in the show's history, and just retired his sonic screwdriver during the sentimental and heartfelt Christmas Special episode this past December. Join us for this 45-minute discussion with Matt Smith as he shares his favorite memories of traveling through time, his growth as an actor over the past 4 years, and how being the iconic Doctor has changed his life. From Will Eisner’s Rube Rookie comics to X-Men’s Colossus and Wolverine’s “fastball specials,” comics and baseball have had a longtime relationship. With the major league season opening tonight, comics writer and historian Danny Fingeroth (Superman on the Couch) is joined by Nathan Stalvey, curator of the Louisville Slugger Museum, as they show awesome baseball-related comics art! Plus: Nathan will have some amazing autographed bats from the Museum, including a combo bat-light-saber signed by Star Wars stars, as well as ones signed by every music legend from Bob Dylan to Kiss. And we’ll also have a preview of the museum’s upcoming exhibition, “Play Ball, Doc! The Art of Warner Bros. Cartoons,” featuring legendary Looney Tunes’ characters like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck! From the mega-success of The Walking Dead, George Romero’s Marvel comic Empire of the Dead, the World War Z movie and Alexandre Phillipe’s new Doc of the Dead documentary, zombies are continuing to shamble (and run) amok in pop culture. But what have been the key moments where zombies have infected entertainment and do the hungry corpses have an expiration date? And what’s next? TV personality and zombie fiend Aaron Sagers digs up other Z-experts for an exciting panel on the good, bad and really ugly of the walking dead genre. (ROOM 213)
