Marvel artist Paolo Rivera has become one of the hottest painters in comics today. Through the popular Mythos series, Rivera has illustrated many of Marvel’s most iconic characters, including the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man and the X-Men. His artwork is currently gracing the covers of Marvel Illustrated: The Iliad and The Twelve. The next installment in the Mythos series has Rivera taking on the legendary Captain America.
Below, Rivera discusses some of his favorite works.
MYTHOS: SPIDER-MAN
“This is the last page of Mythos: Spider-Man, and the one thing I regret about this piece is that I wanted to put him a little bit further below the gargoyles. Each gargoyle was going to be a member of his rogue’s gallery. The first one is Green Goblin and there’s a Venom behind him in the shadows but you can’t really see it. I’d also wanted to do one that looked like the Vulture and Kraven but stylized so they could pass as either the characters or the gargoyles.” |

COLOSSUS & WOLVERINE: FASTBALL SPECIAL
“I did this for my art dealer who was putting together a sketchbook. I did the black and white piece and I realized it needed some color, so I went ahead and colored it in. I was really happy with it and I hope to do more artwork like this in the future.” |

BAXTER BUILDING FROM MYTHOS: FANTASTIC FOUR
“Before we started Mythos: Fantastic Four I hadn’t met my new editor Steve Wacker yet so we all went out to have lunch in the city. They asked me if there was anything particular I wanted to do with Fantastic Four because I hadn’t gotten the first script yet from Paul [Jenkins]. I told them that they had to make sure that Paul left me a page to do a cutaway of the Baxter Building because I was just dying to do it. Fortunately Paul kept his story a page shorter and we were able to squeeze it in.” |

MYTHOS: GHOST RIDER
“This is the big splash page from Mythos: Ghost Rider. He’s jumping over the fountains in front of Caesar’s Palace. Probably the most interesting thing about that is I used Google Earth to look at it from an aerial shot, Caesar’s Palace, because I’d never actually been there but I’m pretty sure that’s what it looks like.”

VOLTRON
“This was another one, along with the Fastball Special, that I did for my art dealer. I was a huge Voltron fan as a kid. Whoever’s doing the movie, if you’re looking for an artist I would be more than happy to drop everything and work on that.” |

DANGER ROOM FROM MYTHOS: X-MEN
“What can I say? This took a long time. It’s probably one of my—well, aside from my Baxter Building—probably one of my most detailed paintings. It’s also one of my favorites. I worked pretty hard to make the water seem like it’s glowing. Some people notice the inflatable shark, other people think it’s a real shark. I guess if it’s really going to be a Danger Room it should have a real shark.”
Paolo Rivera will be appearing at this year’s Wizard World Philadelphia, from May 30th to June 1st. Be sure to order your tickets today!
