With so many titles and publishers to choose from, deciding which to follow can be a daunting task for even the most avid comic book fans. Reviews can help, but sorting through and reading reviews takes time away from reading comics. Asking someone at the local comic book shop is great, but what if the closest shop is hours away? For newcomers, getting started with the “right” books can be nearly impossible.
Enter Hero Chest, the brainchild of William Trommelen and Carla Emmons, who have begun a Kickstarter campaign for a curation service sophisticated enough for veteran and approachable for readers who are newer to comics. The Hero Chest team of curators, guided by years of experience, will select new trade paperbacks and issues based on quality of art and storytelling as well as significance and potential to be interesting to the reader. Each month, subscribers will receive a box with the books as well as curation notes on those titles and fun surprises like t-shirts, stickers, toys and collectibles. Kickstarter contributors will get special benefits like shipping and handling as well as exclusive access to the first three Hero Chest boxes.
“The idea stemmed from conversations with a friend whose closest comic shop was six hours away,” said Trommelen. “We want to share the love of comics and introduce great new content to subscribers.”
Whether an avid collector, newcomer or someone returning to comics, Trommelen notes that Hero Chest wants to be the guide to a great reading experience.
“We want to make the industry more accessible to people who aren’t die-hard fans,” he added, “and provide a useful curation service for people who are, as well as support the industry I have loved my whole life so that great comics keep coming out.”
Fans who share that vision can get in on the ground floor by being a part of the Kickstarter campaign at various levels.
