Funke grew up watching Marvel, DC, and Japanese animations. As a preteen she stumbled upon online comics and fell in love with the medium. She had always enjoyed and appreciated art but on the other hand loved reading stories.
Funke found comics/graphic novels to be the perfect union of both of her passions. She found comics to be a bit more personal. She liked how they were a still image juxtaposed with a series of words, and how each angle and picture can be chosen, it seemed like the artist had more control than they did in animation.
Funke studied at Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI in Indianapolis. She graduated with Bachelors in Fine Arts. Her major was fine arts with a concentration in illustration and minored in art history and psychology.
