Groundbreaking comics creator Michael Golden is known for his unique art style that at various times seems detailed and at other times seems to be amazingly streamlined--cutting away the excess and maintaining the true essentials of a piece. Thus the title of his recent sold-out art books, "Excess: The Art of Michael Golden--Comics Inimitable Storyteller and how he does it," from vanguard Productions.
These techniques, coupled with his signature storytelling construction garner him a legion of devotees that number not only comic readers, but other artists as well. Which explains why his "Wizard School" classes have also proved so popular!
Co-creator of X-men’s Rogue character, Golden’s work has appeared in and on "The 'Nam," "Micronauts," "G.I. Joe," "Dr. Strange," “Nightwing,” “Detective,” "Batman," "Demon's Regret" “Heroes for Hire,” "Exiles" and “Iron Man” among much, much more.
Other milestones in Golden's career include the co-creation of "Bucky O'Hare," which led to an animated series and toy line designed by Michael, and which has just been optioned as a movie via Neal Adams and Continuity Studios. He is also the co-creator of the popular comic book series “Spartan X” with Jackie Chan, “Inside Kung Fu” columnist Ric Meyers and editor/writer Renee Witterstaetter.
Current projects include “Manga Bucky O’Hare” from Vanguard Productions with the Deluxe signed version from Eva Ink; “Michael Golden Monsters” and the upcoming “Heroes and Villains Sketchbook” from Eva Ink; “Modern Masters in the Studio with Michael Golden" from TwoMorrows; “The Creator Chronicles Interview” from Woodcrest Productions, and the much anticipated “Excess: The Art of Michael Golden,” which is going into a second printing.
As a conceptual cover artist, Golden has penciled everything from Batman and Captain America to Vampirella-- and "Virtually every character in the industry at some point or another. I'm the one they come to when they want one of those covers with a thousand characters on them," he laughs.
A member of the Society of Illustrators in Manhattan, Golden's originals have been exhibited in places as diverse as NYC, Gijon, Paris, Brussels, Antwerp, Amsterdam, and most recently in a massive display at the Barcelona Comic Con. Michael has served as an Editor at DC Comics as well as Senior Art Director at Marvel Comics, and has worked on scores of movie production projects, including some currently in development.
Golden is also working on several creator-owned projects, including the secretive "Tunuki." I can't tell you too much about it yet, but it's different from anything you've ever seen," says the writer/artist.
