I have single-handedly saved the world! Twice! Well, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but when you Drink and Draw anything is possible! Mostly things like depression, self-loathing, but hey that’s life, right?
Anyway, hello my friend and please allow me to introduce myself. I’m a man of wealth and fame, talent, good looks and great modesty. My Name is Tommy Castillo and I am judge and jury, not to mention the Host of Wizard Worlds Drink and Draw! (Thunderous applause here...) I have this long bio that is meant to make me sound cool and famous, but the short of it is this: I have been published for twenty-four years in a ton of stuff, but my greatest honor has been my Strathmore Bristol and sketch book covers.
But, I digress. What we are here to talk about is the awesome Drink and Draw. For the most part these have gone on at every con since time past. Yes, in the days of wizards and dragons drink and draw prevailed. But! Then I came along and with fire and Brimstone I forged a new DD and fierce DD to rival all DD before me! Well, OK, I got power hungry and asked the show to let me turn it into a juried competition for pros and amateurs alike. And here's the kick, if you compete and are allowed to compete in the pro category, you can win a FREE table in Artist Alley at your next show! How friggin' cool is that? And if you compete in the amateur category, you can win bragging rights as well as awards made by me!
The DD is now a juried event. This means, in short, that you have to be accepted to compete in the pro category. And yes, I do all the judging. Heh heh heh… and My future wife Sammy is excepting bribes… LOL. Just kidding... well maybe just kidding. You can find the requirements below for entering the Pro category.
As for what happens at my DD, well, that you have to see for yourself. But a quick run down is like this… Fade in on a room filled with drunken artist all waiting to take the other down for a free table…
Having done so much freelance work it would spin your head, I have devised a way to give you, the artist, a chance to see what can come your way. Now, I have also taught as a professor for many years and the class I am most asked to teach is my Drawing from your imagination. At DD you get an abridged version of this class. It’s a mix of how to survive in the art world and how to pull an idea from your brain and get it in the paper.
For example, you can end up having to draw a Predator and the Abominable snowman fighting on a Roller coaster that is on fire. As the two fight the coaster is plummeting down the tracks, and it all takes place in a snow storm. Fun stuff like that! There are a few rules for our little Drink and Draw game and the first is you have to draw traditionally! No Computers! No slates or ipads. If it isn’t a pencil or pen or chalk or conte or friggin' crayon for that matter you can't use it! And if you try to, Sammy will have you eaten by Zombie clowns with really bad breath. I’ve seen her do it, and it isn’t pretty.
There will also be a few of my friends coming to guest judge with me. I will be pulling, kicking and screaming some of the biggest names in the business to come and guest judge with me! Seasoned guys will do anything for free drinks. LOL!
The best thing about all this is that we have a great time. I have had rooms with over ninety artists drawing like mad and drinking like fools. It brings a warm feeling to my heart. Awww… We also have a great deal of people that just come to watch and at time pose for the artist. In all it’s just a great time… With discounted drinks!!!
So come on down, and have a drink, pick up a pencil and join us for a great time! Or go back to your room and talk about that hot Harley you saw today and wish you were doing something better. And did I mention we get models at this thing all the time? Just sayin'...
