|One of the comics industry’s true visionaries at every level, creator, writer, artist, designer, and entrepreneur, Bob Layton has successfully migrated to other media, including television, animation and feature films.|
If you’ve seen the Iron Man movies, then you’re familiar with Bob’s work as the DVD extras make clear. Bob (along with his creative partner David Michelinie), reinvented the Iron Man comic in the late 70s, taking it from near-cancellation to one of Marvel’s all-time bestselling series. Their classic Iron Man story “Demon in a Bottle” was recently voted “one of the top 20 comic stories of all time”. Bob also acted as a consultant on the popular Iron Man film franchise.
Bob also launched the first mini-series in comics’ history at Marvel with his highly-praised “Hercules: Prince of Power”. That series, which Layton wrote and drew, spawned several successful sequels, a graphic novel and is still available to this day in trade paperback format. Bob also launched the record-breaking comic series “X-Factor” for Marvel.
Bob was instrumental to Valiant Comics’ success -- first as co-architect of the Valiant Universe and then, as its Editor-In-Chief/Senior VP. Layton created major story concepts and art designs for the highly-successful Turok: Dinosaur Hunter video game (over 1.5 million units for Acclaim). Valiant was sold to Acclaim Entertainment in 1995 for a staggering 65 million dollars. Bob, along with legendary talents Dick Giordano and David Michelinie, formed Future Comics in 2002. Future was the first, self-distributing comic company and its library of stories are still available digitally on I-Verse.
Bob recently made a career change and moved to Hollywood to turn his attentions to developing new properties for motion pictures and television, including “The Helix” & “Mettle” sci-fi/thriller screenplays for Edward James Olmos Productions and television scripts for Nickelodeon’s “Iron Man Armored Adventures” and Cinemax’s “Femme Fatales”.
He’s also co-creator/executive producer on the upcoming comedy/horror film, “Shambler” for Odyssey Pictures and is hard at work writing the screenplay for a new action/adventure film for superstar actor/comedian Dane Cook.
Bob’s graphic novel “Colony”, featuring the last work of his mentor Dick Giordano, was released in October 2012.
